What are vellum inserts, and when are they worth it?

Vellum is a frosted, translucent paper layered over (or wrapped around) the invitation. It does three jobs: it adds a tactile unboxing moment, it softens and previews the design underneath, and it protects the printed piece in the mail. It's worth it when the invitation is the centerpiece of your wedding aesthetic — and it pairs especially well with dark paper, where the frosted layer over white-on-black looks straight out of a stationery magazine.
